PHOENIX REIGN
Destination Unknown
Self-released CD
Phoenix Reign is more or less a classical heavy metal band with some power metal influences, writing about historical topics like the ancient Byzantine Empire. This topic about rich Byzantine history is very original and unexploited within metal waters so one might say that Phoenix Reign are pioneers when it comes to that lyrical background. The album ends with one epic track, Constantinople 1453, which is actually the date of the fall of mighty Byzantine Empire, also know as Eastern Rome. Also, it seems that these historical influences have some impact on music, so a person could hear some ancient tunes and native instruments. Aside of lyrical concept and background, the most interesting moment in the band is leading female vocalist and as I have just mentioned few ethnic influences. When we directly talk about music, it has huge range of influences from power metal to some rock moments, but all in all, Phoenix Reign plays heavy metal. Personally I am most delighted by the last song, Constantinople 1453. that has great epical influences, and in my opinion, band should continue in that way, if it is possible because this is the most original track on the record and when it comes to music it has the best quality. Other tracks are more or less, written in classical way, and throughout that they are good they miss this dramatic feeling that carries the closing song. But the band has a great potential-just check out track entitled Moving On and you are going to find great guitars riffs and melodies.Visual aspect of this CD is really great, from cover artwork to whole booklet. It mainly reflects warfare of the Byzantines. And, as we come to production, I can only say it a good one so it suit perfectly for this kind of music. I will watch with great enthusiasm what this band is going to do with their forthcoming releases and in which direction they are going to write their music.
